Police have vandalized the houses of six Awami League and Chhatra League leaders in Jessore after beating a policeman at midnight on Monday.Municipal Awami League general secretary SM Mahmud Hasan Bipu, who was arrested on charges of beating a policeman, has been released by the police. He was arrested around 9:15 pm on Monday night and released on Tuesday afternoon. Leaders and activists blocked the road all day on Tuesday in protest of Bipu’s arrest.
District Awami League leaders allege: Police raided the houses of Awami League and Chhatra League leaders. Shahin Chakladar, Member of Parliament for Jessore-6 and General Secretary of District Awami League, Abdul Khaleq, Vice President, his son Haji Sumon, former Executive Member of District Awami League Golam Mostafa, Member of District Juba League Police raided the homes of Manzur Alam, MM College BCL general secretary Touhidur Rahman and Juba League activist Sohag. The houses were vandalized at that time.
Jessore district Awami League vice-president Abdul Khaleq said, “Police raided the house of 5-6 leaders including my house.”
Leaders and activists staged a protest in front of the district Awami League office on Tuesday morning. Road blockades and protests were staged at Keshabpur on the Jessore-Chuknagar highway from 9am to 11pm. Besides, protests were also staged in Abhaynagar by blocking Jessore-Khulna highway.
Jessore Superintendent of Police Ashraf Hossain said around 8:30 pm on Tuesday that a case had been registered in connection with the incident. Legal action will be taken to identify the real culprits. He said two people have already been arrested.
According to eyewitnesses and police sources, Constable Imran, who was working in the police lines, was talking to a woman in a white robe at the premises of the central Shaheed Minar in Old Kasba around 8pm on Monday. At that time some leaders and activists of Awami League went there and attacked him. Despite identifying himself, Imran was picked up from the Shaheed Minar and beaten. Upon receiving the news, the police rescued him. The accused were taken into police custody at that time.
Jessore Municipal Awami League president Advocate Asaduzzaman said a white-clad policeman was sitting close to a woman in the Shahid Minar area. For this reason, some locals beat him. Hearing the commotion, Awami League leader Bipu stepped forward from Sheikh Abu Naser’s club next door. He tries to resolve. He is not involved in the beating. The police picked him up at around 9.45 pm. Meanwhile, police released Bipur on Tuesday afternoon after a day-long protest against his arrest. He has been admitted to Jessore 250-bed hospital.
